This is one of my favorite times of year to rest, relax, recharge, and spend time with family and friends enjoying the magic of the season. My husband Chris is the Southland Conference Commissioner, and earlier this month we traveled to Las Vegas for the National Football Foundation’s Hall of Fame Event. Every December at the event, the partners of the Commissioners volunteer together in the local community. This year, we spent the day at the Catholic Charities of Southern Nevada, serving lunch.

These couple of hours reminded me of the importance of self-care, but also something that is often lost in the discussion. Giving — going beyond ourselves and stepping out of our comfort zones to serve others — is one of the most effective and proven ways to boost our well-being, transforming the giver as much as the recipient.

Here, six inspiring members of our Thrive Challenge community explain how they’re volunteering over the holidays.

Kathy Murphy, Walmart Supercenter #76, Berryville, AR

Arvis Abban, Walmart Customer, 2021 Grand Champ, Fredericksburg, VA

Jackie Hammond, Walmart Store #2326, Hornell, NY

Matthew Fry, Walmart Customer, Lebanon, TN

Patty Kennedy, Sam’s Club #6572, Knoxville, TN

Kirsten Ohara, Walmart Store #2326, Hornell, NY

Sunday Oguntoyinbo, Walmart Supercenter #5727, Bradenton, FL
