Pets

Our pets become valued members of the family. They provide companionship, comfort, and fun. Did you know our preferred furry (or feathered) friends can shift as we age through the various life stages?

Of course, that doesn’t mean we should trade them for something else when we age.

Our pets are more loyal and loving than some people.

Fun Facts

While readers find writing here about wellness, coaching or surviving toxic workplaces, this is a fun diversion. I’m opting to write some new “Fun Facts” here so we can lighten up and look at another part of life.

When the world seems to go mad, our pets are the support we need.

Canine Companions for Young Adults (18–34)

Millennials and Gen Z pet-lovers with active and social lifestyles are attracted to dogs. The loyal four-legged, energetic friends can keep up with their owner’s fast-paced lives, making them ideal partners for weekend adventures.

According to the American Kennel Club, while Labrador Retriever was the most popular dog for 31-years, the French Bulldog moved to the top of the list with the Lab now in second place.

Golden Retrievers, German Shepherd, and Poodle take the 3 through 5 spot, respectively. Each of these dogs aligns well with energetic younger adults that might start a family. The dogs are adaptable, affectionate, good with children, well-trainable, and energetic.

Feathered Friends for Young Adults

Some young adults, with smaller living spaces or a preference for calmer company, find comfort with a bird. A survey by the American Pet Products Association, show over 6 million bird owners in the U.S.

Typical feathered friends range from Parakeets to Parrots with unique personalities, engaging interaction, and less hands-on attention needed to provide endless amusement.

Midlife Pets for Active & Established (35–54)

In the mid-life ages between 35 and 54, life gets busy with careers, families, and other responsibilities. Cats emerge as ideal companions for their independent nature and low-maintenance needed.

Their calming presence offers a welcome reprieve from busy careers and provides a sense of peace and companionship.

Cat ownership is high among this demographic, with breeds like Maine Coons, Ragdolls, American Shorthair, and Persian Cats for their calm and affectionate nature.

Golden Years Companions (55+)

Retirement opens doors to a more relaxed pace and renewed focus on personal well-being. Smaller dogs and senior cats become valued companions. These pets offering unconditional love and require less physical effort.

This age group becomes familiar with the term “Aging in Place”. With pets, it becomes a case of “Aging together”.

There is no longer the need to carry 50 pound bags of food, or risk injuries from walking larger animals.

The same cats noted for midlife apply here (Maine Coons, Ragdolls, American Shorthair, and Persian Cats). Seniors often choose Terriers, Pomeranian, Cavalier King Charles Spaniels, Bichon Frises, Pug, Maltese, and Shih Tzu because of their gentle nature and low-energy needs.

Choosing the right pet for you goes beyond age and sex. Consider your lifestyle, living space, and personality.

🐈 Do you want an adventurous hiking buddy or a furry friend for companionship in quiet evenings?

🐕 Do you seek playful behavior for fun or calmness?

Research the different breeds and personality traits, spend time with animals at shelters or rescues, and trust your gut feeling. The right pet will enrich your life in ways you never imagined.

Be kind and love your animal friends and they will love you back in uncountable ways.
