French workers have officially been given the “right to disconnect” from work-related technology — such as computers, smartphones and email — after the work day is over, due to a new labor law that took effect Sunday.
The law requires that companies with more than 50 employees “negotiate new out-of-office email guidelines with staff,” or, if they can’t agree on guidelines, publish a charter that clearly defines when employees are allowed to disconnect.
In a statement, the Ministry of Labor said, “These measures are designed to ensure respect for rest periods and…balance between work and family and personal life.”
