Houweling’s Tomatoes, is a family owned, world-renowned greenhouse tomato grower with facilities in Camarillo, CA, Mona, UT and Delta, BC. Founded by Cornelius Houweling and now led by his son Casey, Houweling’s is dedicated to delivering a full complement of scrumptious tomatoes and cucumbers, while constantly innovating to reduce its environmental footprint. One of my favorite books is entitled “THE RICHEST MAN WHO EVER LIVED: King Solomon’s Secrets To Success, Wealth, and Happiness” by Steven K. Scott. Mr. Scott defines in his book that the first step to extraordinary achievement is diligence. This is the definition of diligence in Chapter 2:
“DILIGENCE is a learnable skill which combines: creative persistence, a smart-working effort rightly planned and rightly performed in a timely, efficient and effective manner to attain a result that is pure and of the highest quality of excellence. “
This quality of diligence is embodied in Mr. Casey Houweling’s life. I have the pleasure of meeting Mr. Casey Houweling and he was so gracious to give us a tour of Houweling’s Tomotoes Greenhouse in the Greater Area of Vancouver, Canada. Mr. Houweling mentioned to that he is a farmer at heart who ensures to have good night sleep and be an early riser is part of his success.
During my tour in Houweling’s Tomatoes, I was inspired to learn about its history, long trajectory for the success of this vision for 25 years, and taste how sweet and delicious the tomatoes are. I enjoy eating them. It takes diligence to run this enterprise that has a noble goal of saving energy through clean-sustainable and environmentally friendly greenhouse. Just one single product only: TOMATOES. Most companies, have multiple services and products, this is compelling to know this multi-million dollar business is solely focus on producing just tomatoes and that’s it. It is the largest and best in the world of its kind.
Mr. Casey Houweling is a visionary. From the time he was a small boy pruning and picking his father’s vegetables, Casey has known what he wanted to do with his life. He wanted to be a farmer, but not a traditional one. Now in his 50’s, he heads one of the most technically-advanced and environmentally-friendly greenhouse operations in the world.
“Growing the best tomatoes doesn’t come easy,” he likes to say. And he is quick to add that there are no shortcuts in craftsmanship. A man known for his work ethic, Casey’s dedication to quality is rooted in his deep respect for his father’s commitment to quality. The passion for growing the best tomatoes is in the blood. It’s as simple as that, and those who know the Houweling’s operation can attest to the fact that craftsman’s care extends beyond Casey Houweling. It permeates the entire operation — from seeding and propagation through sales and service.
In a world where companies expand through broad and sometimes reckless diversification, Casey believes in specializing in one business — greenhouse tomatoes. The specialist philosophy isn’t new; it’s quite simple, really. He believes that focus and attention to one category (tomatoes) versus an array of fruits and vegetables is critical to enhancing one’s know-how. Ultimately, know-how and passion are the keys to quality.
Though he always knew his vocational calling, Casey Houweling never gave much thought to life beyond the greenhouse until he met his future wife. Today, Casey enjoys another house; this one isn’t made of glass. It is the loving home of Casey, wife Linda and daughters Rebecca, Monica and April.
