¨In-tu-i-tion¨ – WIkipdia´s definition. – ¨The ability to acquire knowledge without proof, evidence or conscious reasoning or without understanding how the knowledge was acquired.¨
My definition – ¨The still small voice within that leads you in the path you should go when in doubt.¨
A few months ago I had the opportunity to travel to India for the first time. I was invited to be a part of a panel at the India licensing show in Mumbai. I was going to visit Mumbai and New Delhi as well. I had heard many amazing things about this beautiful country and also some people who had warned me about some of the shocking social differences that you can see.
Each trip I take I always go open to learn and meet new people since I think traveling is one of the most amazing gifts someone can have.
After flying from Mexico city – JFK – Abu Dhabi – to Mumbai I was finally at the hotel around 4:00 am local time. After checking into my room I put my running shoes on and went for a run. I was staying close by the ¨Gateway of India¨ monument and just ran out the door of the hotel and got lost in the sea of people. I went past many cafes, hundreds of cars hunking, homeless people and different types of smells I had never experienced before.
As soon as I got back to the hotel I looked at some of the tourist destinations in the city and read about Ghandi´s house. Mahatma Ghandi was the leader of the Independence movement against British rule also known as the ¨Father of the Nation.¨
I decided I would check if there were any tour cars from the hotel that could take me. A few minutes later they had assigned me one driver and he was going to give me a 4 hour tour throughout the city.
After sightseeing through many of the torusit attractions our last stop was Gandhi´s house!
I went in and the man in the front desk gave me some information, then I decided to just walk and look around. It was a charming small house, with a lot of interesting details about his life. After finishing with the first flloor I climbed the stairs to the second floor and before I knew it I was standing in front of a framed writting that caught my attention.
This is what it said:
¨There come to us moments in life when about some things we need no proof from within. A little voice within us tell us. You are on the right track, move neither to your left nor right, but keep to the straight and narrow way.
There are moments in your life when you must act, even though you cannot carry your best friends with you. The still small voice within you must always be the final arbiter when there is a conflict of duty.
The writting kept going but what caught the most of my attention was the phrase about the little voice within us, telling us we are on the right track and to keep to the straight and narrow way.
Do you know what voice I am talking about?
The one that whispers to you, enough work; go and spend time with your kids. That voice that when everyone around you is telling you that you are crazy for continuing chasing after your dreams the voice tells you, you are going to be OK, keep on going!
Seven years ago I was down to $200 dollars, I had just moved back to my hometown of Mexico City to launch my brand. When I arrived I stayed with a friend for a while and then had no place to go but my only option was a $5 dollar / night youth hostel downtown.
Most people were telling me that I was crazy to follow my dreams, that artists didn´t made any money. But that small voice inside of me told me that I was going to make it and be Ok.
Today I am more than OK!
If I had not listened to that small voice I would have missed on so many opportunities that have come my way since then. Sometimes that small voice will warn you, sometimes it will encourage you and other times it will guide you.
I know all of you have heard that small voice, I want to encourage that th next time you are indecisive or you have doubts about what to do. Take time and listen to your voice within because its there to help you.
Below is a phrase that I wrote when I only had those $200 dollars and was staying at that youth hostel in a room with 12 bunkbeds. I was 37 years old and most people were telling me to quit my dreams.
¨It doesn´t matter where you come from, or how much money you might have. If you have Faith, a Dream and you Work Hard; you can accomplish anything¨
