This week our Calling Card is centered around faith.

Not the religious kind of faith. In fact, if it works better for you, just swap the word faith with trust.

The reason we are starting with faith is because it really is the foundation for anything we want to achieve. Without faith we would be stopped in our tracks. With faith we can take that first step…and the next…and the next.

“Faith is taking the first step even when you don’t see the whole staircase.” — Martin Luther King

We have to believe things are possible before they can happen. And in the context of following your dreams or your calling — faith is a main ingredient. It’s that little anchor inside each of us that keeps us grounded yet hopeful.

Whether your deepest desire is be a sports writer, dog trainer, film critic or to join the Peace Corps — whatever– in order to get through each day, you need to trust yourself, the process and the Universe (God, Life, Source — whatever you believe).

I know it’s easy to say — faith…trust… blah, blah, but then you have a bad day and you’re like “nope I need confirmation! This faith stuff is too hard.” If what’s getting in your way is that it’s hard for you to trust in something that you can’t see it, I totally get it! But I know you can do it.

Here’s THE best example that I’ve heard — think of electricity.

  • we can’t see it
  • we can’t hear it
  • we don’t think about it
  • we’re not stressed about it
  • we’re not desperate to get it — “I really NEED that electricity to come on!”

No, we don’t. We actually don’t give it too much thought at all — we just trust that the lights will come on when we flip that switch.

The only time we probably think about it is when the power goes out which is usually infrequent. Even then, we have faith it will come back on. Poof! There it is.

The same exact theory can apply to everything else. If your dream is to “fill-in-the-blank” and you decide to go for it, if you have faith it can happen. It really can. It opens up the realm of possibility. On the flip side, if you decide it absolutely cannot happen. Then guess what? It will never because you have flipped the off switch. Just like electricity, it will not shine light if the switch is turned off.

If you have faith in yourself, the process and life, you can redirect that wasted energy of worry and overthinking toward action. It’s that simple.

Trust me — you will get to your goals so much quicker if you have faith.

In theory it super simple — you have a goal, you trust it will happen, you take inspired action and you let it go. You’re then on your way because you know it will all work out for the best. Whatever that means for you. Sounds easy but still hesitant?

So we are going to start small. Here’s what I want you to do — we are going to play the faith game.

As you go through this week, I want you to have faith in the small stuff. Trust that you’ll get a great idea, you’ll get to work on time, you’ll get a good night’s sleep — anything that you believe can happen. Stretch your faith a bit and pick things that may or may not happen.

I also want you to keep track of what you chose and how it turned out. Just one small thing at a time. No pressure.

I’ll tell you what I do and you can try this too…

I do this will parking spaces all the time. In fact at dinner tonight the restaurant was packed. There were people parked blocks away. I said, “thank you, think you, thank you, for finding a great parking space.” Guess what? Someone pulled out right up front leaving a stellar space. Score!

I know that might sound silly and my family knows this well, but do you know nine times out of ten, I get a great space? That’s the honest truth.

The idea behind this is to start strengthening that faith muscle.

When you go to the gym, you start small. The same applies here — you start small and then slowly apply it to bigger and bigger things. It will eventually prove that having faith does work and things will work out.

So enjoy your week, trust the process and please comment and let me know how you did.

Have a great week!

Have Faith. Start Small. Trust the Process.
