What you eat for breakfast sets the tone for the rest of your day. It literally breaks your fast from sleeping — your body is looking for fuel to start the day right. A healthy breakfast sets you up for good nutrition and energy.

I like to aim for a combination of healthy fats, whole grains, protein and antioxidants…this gives your body and brain the fuel it needs for a productive morning and will also keep you full until lunch — helping you avoid unhealthy mid-morning snacks.

Here are my 3 “Go To” Breakfasts…

Steel Cut Oats

This is one of my favourite breakfasts! Gluten free steel cut oats are full of super healthy fibre — good for your heart, digestive system and your brain. The mix of protein and fibre helps keep you full longer. I always dress it up with berries (antioxidants), nuts (healthy fats), seeds (protein, magnesium, healthy fats) and cinnamon (antioxidants). If you feel the need for some sweetness use a 1/2 teaspoon of maple syrup. One easy bowl…tons of nutrition! No time to cook in the morning? Try Overnight Oats for an quick “to-go” healthy breakfast.

Avocado Toast

The ever popular Avocado Toast has a special place in my heart! Lol — I know that sounds a bit silly but honestly it is my absolute favourite thing to eat — and it makes a perfect breakfast. I make it with two pieces of Ezekiel bread (you can find this in the freezer section of your grocery store) which has about 4 grams of protein per slice and lots of healthy fibre. I mash up half an avocado on top and then top it with hemp seeds and fresh ground sea salt and pepper. Sometimes I add pumpkin seeds and a dash of paprika. I like to have fruit with this such as berries or an orange for extra antioxidants.

Wellness Smoothie

This delicious smoothie has spinach for whole body health, avocado for healthy fats that keep you full and give you energy, mango for vitamin C, parsley for detoxing, water for hydration, hemp seeds for magnesium and turmeric as an anti-inflammatory — talk about starting your day off right!
