Eight years ago today, I said good-bye to my best friend, my mom. She shaped my life in ways that I am still discovering like dormant seeds planted in memories that bloom as I continue to grow and experience new circumstances in my life.

Sometimes colleagues tell me that I am too personal in my sharing, (they are well meaning and constantly cheering me on) but my response has always been that spiritual growth IS personal and I teach through transparently sharing my truths with you.

One of my markers for choosing a teacher or mentor in my life is to choose someone who admits they are not perfect, does not have all the answers but who practices what they teach and walks their talk. My motto on that subject is, “If you’re not a poster child for your product, I’m not buying it.” You know what I’m talking about. You know a “salesy pitch” when you hear one. Old marketing is such an old paradigm now.

If you want anyone to value what you are offering, you’ve got to be living it and being the example of it in action. What is more personal than that?

My mother taught me so many foundational values but there are three that always come to mind. She told me at a very young age “never give up your girlfriends, life can sometimes change, you never quite know how everything is going to turn out but your girlfriends will always be there for you.” She also told me to “never give up on my dreams.” The third was that “every girl should at one time in her life own a convertible.” That one always made me laugh. “Why?” I asked her. “Because you prove to yourself that you can do it, with your own money, and you can feel the wind in your hair and taste your freedom.” I was 13…we were driving to a dentist appointment.

Thanks to social and online media I am proud to be a member of a global sisterhood. (Men are allowed in this sacred group too, honestly, we’re not that bossy about it.) It allows me to stay in touch with friends all over the globe, my mum would have loved social media!

Today, I drive a Jeep, that is my convertible, the Liberty (hey, I just realized the synchronicity in the name) with the giant sunroof that is almost the full size of the roof. Sometimes when the weather is warm I open the roof up completely, turn up the radio and play George Michael’s song “Freedom” and give my mum a wink and a smile. I know she comes along on those rides with me. And thanks to amazing people like you, I am living my dreams.

Each of you touch my heart deeply, and I want you to know, I will always bring you my best. I want you to be the Hero of your own story, just like my mom taught me to be.

So if you happen to catch a whiff of Oscar de la Renta zipping past you, or hear an infectious Irish laugh in your ear, you’ll know that Ellie has paid you a visit and is cheering you on too.

We’ve got so much support from home, you need only ask “where shall I go next in fulfillment of my dreams?” and watch how the Universe and all it’s amazing cohorts in the sisterhood, brotherhood and convertible drivers lane rise up to meet you and show you the way.

All love,
