I had always told myself that if I was ever made redundant I would start my own business, but I never for one-minute thought that it would happen, after all I had reached the ripe old age of 53 and was only in my second full time job ever, and it hadn’t happened. But suddenly it did, and it’s a horrible feeling to think that a company doesn’t want you and you start believing that it’s all your own fault. Could I have done something differently, was there something wrong with my work? I now know that it was none of these things and that there was nothing I could have done differently to avoid being made redundant, So I did what I had promised myself to do, I set up my own business, and boy was it hard!

There were a variety of reasons why that first business wasn’t going to go anywhere but I’ll save them for another day. So, when it looked like I wouldn’t be able to keep it going I turned to an MLM business and that’s when it hit me……every successful female business owner I came across was in their 30s and stunningly good looking! Have you noticed that? My Facebook feed, the Facebook groups I was in, Instagram everywhere was telling me how successful these young business owners were. Six and seven figure earners, telling me that I could be as successful as them and every single one of them gorgeous.

I must admit, I lost heart a bit, but decided to rebrand part of my original business as a final go at getting my own business to work. This time, because I had learned from my mistakes I decided to look for help, but yes, all the people who were running programmes that looked right for me were all those 30 something models, and to make things worse, everyone that posts on their pages are also young and gorgeous?

So, one day while scrolling through Facebook I saw that one of these successful women was offering a free call providing help and advice to help you run your business. Ok, I though a call she’ll never see me so maybe she’ll think I’m one of the beautiful crowd and her advice may make the difference between my business growing or dying. So, I filled in the form, got an appointment for a call and then…. disaster. This person does all her calls using Zoom. Now that just shows my age, I had assumed a call would be by phone! I thought up all types of excuses for cancelling that call but in the end, I thought too bad if she thinks I’m too old, not good looking and unlikely to make it into this successful club full of good looking people.

The call was amazing, I got so much helpful advice and ideas on how to operate and promote my business and she didn’t look too horrified when she saw me. That call saved my business because I was so inspired by what I heard and the support that I got that it galvanised me into action. That amazing woman is now my coach, I’m on my second programme working with her and my business is starting to fly. My mindset has also changed. Age and looks are irrelevant in the world of successful business women, it’s what’s in your head and heart that matters.

You’re never too old to follow your heart and start a new business
