We Are Living Inside Change
The word transform means to move from one form to another. Most people sense it intuitively: something is changing. Personally, collectively, globally, they see ever more clearly that transformation is not just a theme of our time—it is the essential force shaping our moment. What makes this era radical is that nature and culture are transforming simultaneously. The Earth itself is changing, and so are our social systems, our identities, our stories, our ways of being. This double movement creates a deeper dynamic than anything in recorded history.
The essence of creation is transformation.
When we speak about transformation, we are not referring to self-improvement or fixing something broken. We are talking about the fundamental rhythm of life itself. We are in the midst of a transformation that affects the entire. That is why learning the nature of transformation is no longer optional—it is essential.
Transformation is the dynamic of the cosmos. Nature is constantly transforming. To transform means to move from one form into another. The classic image is the caterpillar becoming a butterfly—what was once crawling on a leaf dissolves and re-emerges as something that can fly. In the study of caterpillars turning into butterflies, which has fascinated humans from the very beginning, it turns out that the caterpillar’s cells resist and attack the butterfly’s cells. So, there is in nature a built-in resistance to change. And that’s really helpful if you think about human psychology. There is an old idea that human beings become wiser when they learn to read the script of nature. And the script of nature is transformation. But here is the crucial detail we often overlook: for the butterfly to be born, the caterpillar must die. The essence of transformation is death and rebirth.
The one who trusts transformation, even when the path forward is not yet visible, is where renewal begins.
If creation is an ongoing process—of the Earth, of the cosmos, and of each human life—then we are always moving through cycles of life, death, and renewal. Most of the time, this happens unconsciously. But in times like these, when everything is changing at once, we are asked to become conscious participants.
One of the core lessons is this: transformation requires letting go. Many people, and many systems, cannot change because they are holding onto what is already dying. We see this politically. We see it environmentally. And we see it in our own inner lives.
Why Change Feels So Hard?
If creation is ongoing—if we are constantly being made new—then why does transformation feel so difficult? Why do we get stuck?
Here is something important to say clearly: resistance to change is not a failure. It is natural.
When scientists study caterpillar metamorphosis, they discover something remarkable. The caterpillar’s cells actually attack the emerging butterfly cells. Nature itself contains resistance to change. This matters psychologically. We long for a world that is more inclusive, interconnected, peaceful, and creative. But to move toward that world, we must learn how to let go of what we can no longer be—without knowing yet what we will become.
Our moment of transformation is so deep and global that certainty is impossible. We must let go of needing to know or control. Facing this not-knowing directly is fundamental to engaging transformation.
Paradoxically, not-knowing is the doorway to a more profound knowing.
The Invitation
The invitation here is to be gentle and honest with ourselves:
- What might you be holding onto right now that is already asking to be released?
- Why are we holding on?
- What’s actually the process of holding on to things that need to go? What is that?
- Where do you notice resistance in your body, your choices, your relationships, your sense of self?
- Can you meet that resistance with compassion—knowing it is natural—while also listening for the quieter voice underneath?
The one who trusts transformation, even when the path forward is not yet visible, is where renewal begins.
