We have all heard the saying that the most basic definition of insanity is continuing to do the same thing that you have always done and expecting a different result. Well, this particular saying came to mind as I was dropping my teens off at school one morning. We got out later than usual and so traffic was heavier than what we were used to. I immediately noted the long line of cars stuck in traffic near the school. My first thought was “Why do they keep coming this way?”
I am notorious for looking for alternate routes. My philosophy is that even if it costs me a little extra time, I will learn and see something new and that is always worth it to me. As I looked at the line of cars, I just could not help thinking that it seemed like a waste of time to keep coming to the same exact spot each day and sitting for long periods of time, waiting for the traffic to move when you don’t have to.
This reminded me of some of the professionals that I have come in contact with who are looking for career direction.
They have been told one way to do things and this one way, many times does not produce the results that they are looking for. Often they will complain or wish things were different but they continue to use the same methods AND when things don’t work out there is tendency to find someone or something to blame (i.e. this degree isn’t worth the paper it’s printed on, those employers are discriminating against me, etc.). I have heard it all.
The fact of the matter is, just like the line of traffic on that same street each morning, there are multiple alternate routes, you just have to be willing to step out of your comfort zone and explore those routes.
So to summarize: Stop the insanity! If something is not producing a result, try something different! If you aren’t sure which direction to take, ask for help!
If you open your mind to new routes and ways of doing things, you will be amazed at just how much progress you can make in life.
