Glassdoor has released its 2018 Best Places to Work guide and the results are somewhat surprising.
The guide is split up into two lists: large companies and small and medium companies, separated by having more or less than 1,000 employees. In a post explaining this year’s list, the company notes that the best places to work have a few things in common: a mission to believe in, a strong culture, open and honest communication and a focus on their employees.
Among the big companies, Facebook came in at the top spot for the third time in the decade since Glassdoor started releasing the annual guide. The list also includes In-N-Out Burger in the fourth slot and Google in fifth. Both Delta and Southwest Airlines cracked the top 25, despite the fact that, from a traveler’s perspective, airlines are not the most beloved companies.
To make this list, Glassdoor sorted through the reviews sections of its site, where current and former employees can write anonymously about their experience at a company. These reviews include employees’ opinions about the best reasons to work at a company and the downsides. Employees are also “encouraged to provide advice to management,” rate how satisfied they are with their employer and their CEOs as well as “key workplace attributes like career opportunities, compensation and benefits, culture and values, senior management and work-life balance,” according to a press release about Glassdoor’s methodology in ranking the best places to work. Employees are also asked whether they would “recommend their employer to a friend and whether they believe their employer’s six month business outlook is positive, negative or if they have no opinion.”
This just goes to show that the things that people most value in a company often have more to do with culture and values than they do with financial incentives.
