The Majority Rules
It’s true. The majority rules and it has rules. They are unspoken, but dominant rules.
The voice of others and peer pressure can be so strong that it can be difficult to discern our own opinion from that of the majority.
And, without taking the time to reflect on our opinions and decisions, we may inadvertently find ourselves in agreement with most people.
We might brush this aside, but it’s actually a really big problem.
Because MOST people will say it can’t be done.
MOST people will say it’s impossible.
MOST people will say there isn’t enough time.
MOST people will say you are too old. Too young. Too shy. Too outspoken.
MOST people think it’s too hard. Too much work. Too much money.
That’s MOST people.
But how many times has it been done? Records were broken? The impossible became possible? Better ways were created? Visions came to life? Because of ONE person.
Believe in YOU again
group·think /ɡro͞opˌTHiNGk/ noun: the practice of thinking or making decisions as a group in a way that discourages creativity or individual responsibility (courtesy of google.com)
When we can shift from no longer believing the majority, but believing in ourselves — and in our journey — instead, that is when the impossible happens.
Our desire to be accepted and to belong can be so intense that we actually can forget who we are and what we believe.
So, what really happens when we listen to most people?
Most of the time nothing at all. Absolutely nothing. Things stay the same. Limits aren’t pushed. The impossible stays impossible. Dreams remain as dreams.
Let’s not wonder what could have been, or play it safe for the sake of belonging, but let’s write our own story.
When is a time that you believed in yourself instead of listening to most people? What have you overcome in life? Drop a comment and tell me your story.
