one of the greatest gifts, i have ever been given
is the honor of raising my daughter elisa.
she is developmentally delayed.
she can not speak clearly like the rest of us so easily do
but most times, i can understand what she is trying to say.
but sometimes i don’t and when that happens, she yells
when i still don’t get it, she tantrums
and then if i still don’t understand she attacks.
when i thought about how different she was from others
i realised in this regard, she is not different at all.
everyone i know does the same thing.
when we speak and don’t feel heard, we yell
when we yell and don’t feel heard, we create a scene
when that doesn’t work, we attack.
elisa taught me
we all have a deep, deep desire to be heard
it is as strong as our need for air, water, food and love
and we can all give each other this gift
it doesn’t take a college degree or beleif in a certain religion
we do not need to fix each other, change each other
or agree with each other.
all we need to do is
LISTEN and acknowledge, and love and accept each other.
what would you hear if you were to really listen?
