Whenever I begin to work with a new client, as part of our introduction, we discuss hobbies or passion projects. It is an excellent ice breaker which starts a new conversation around our personal commitment to both physical and mental health.

As a coach, with a holistic approach to wealth and wellbeing, I have found that everyone in business today seems to feel the “time crunch.” Not enough hours in the day and too little time for friends and family.

It seems to be a universal theme!

When we begin the conversation, it is very interesting to hear how people relax and destress. For some, it is a fitness routine; a work-out or brisk walk is an excellent way to decompress at the beginning or end of the day. It may coordinate with a passion project such as volunteering within your community and for others, it is a hobby they may have started as a teenager. Things like: cooking, knitting, model airplanes, kite making or fixing cars. Whatever fuels your energy and connects you with your core values.

Here are a few “simple” benefits when making time for your hobby:
1) Destress and relax – lowers blood pressure with an increased sense of calm
2) Encourages outside the box thinking – creativity often opens the windows to great ideas
3) Promotes smiles – whenever we take the time to concentrate on something we enjoy we just plain feel good
4) Inspires “good” sleep – when we find the time to do what we enjoy it creates an energy balance that inspires calm and restful sleep

Hobbies are as unique as the individual and we should give ourselves permission to pursue that passion.

It may sound crazy, but, I know a number of folks who actually schedule time in their calendar for their hobby. It is not only a friendly reminder but confirms their commitment to “me time.”
It is no different than coordinating work commitments or family events – Why not schedule time for your hobby?

Here is a personal challenge: For the next three months do just that – schedule time in your calendar for your hobby. At the same time, note if there is a change in your mood, attitude or outlook.

I’ll bet at the end of that time you will notice that in the weeks that you took a little “me-time” you just simply felt better.

Giving yourself permission to be in the zone while enjoying your hobby is a great way to promote physical and mental health.

Is it time to reconnect with your hobby?

Schedule a little “me-time” in your calendar… it just may promote smiles while recharging your personal batteries!
