Check out your local gym

Though gyms have had to close across the country, many local gyms have kept their community together by posting their classes online. One way to beat loneliness caused by social distancing is by virtually sticking with your usual communities, support systems, and routines.

“It’s important that every gym around the country continues to provide their clients with as much content as they possibly can and get them as motivated as they can,” said Bobby Florio, owner of Synergy Fitness, a local gym in Fairfield, New Jersey.

Florio and his team have been using social media to keep their community active during the mandatory shutdown, which was announced in New Jersey on March 16. Florio and the other trainers at Synergy Fitness have been using all mediums to reach their community- from Instagram, YouTube and Facebook to Skype and FaceTime.

“I’ve got all my instructors working, whether it’s a live class, a YouTube video…we’re really trying to pump out the content right now and have everyone staying sharp throughout this tough time,” Florio said.

Florio emphasizes that it’s more important than ever to continue exercising while you are practicing social distancing.

“The saying always goes, ‘wake up, dress up, show up,’ and in my opinion, that should not change, even though you might be showing up in your living room,” Florio said.

Exercise is key to strengthening your immune system, as well as maintaining your physical and mental health, and local gym owners should continue to help their community in any way that they can.

“One of the biggest jobs as a business owner is to figure it out,” Florio said. “Let’s get to work, let’s figure it out, and let’s see how we can come away from this better, bigger, stronger as better business owners.”

If you don’t belong to a local gym, do some research and see if there are any currently posting free classes to their social media platforms.
