We often equate the summer with vacation and free time, so why does it sometimes feel so exhausting? There are a variety of reasons for this phenomenon including longer daylight hours, higher temperatures, increased humidity, and packed schedules! We often try to squeeze in vacations, family events, outdoor activities, and home projects into just a few short months. The heat can also lead to dehydration, poor sleep quality, and fatigue which can make our everyday tasks feel even more tiring.
So, we need to figure out what we can do to ensure that we are getting enough downtime while still remaining productive during the summer. One way to do so is to be very intentional about our schedules. Instead of trying to completely fill the evening and weekend with activities, leave time open to rest, engage in hobbies, or simply do nothing. You can also prioritize the most important goals this summer and then tackle them during the cooler parts of the day when you have more energy. It also helps to stay hydrated and maintain a consistent sleep schedule. Pencil in your downtime as well just as you would do with any other activity.
Some other ways to relax and de-stress this summer include spending some time outdoors. Hiking, gardening, and spending time by the water are solid choices. Other fantastic ways to relieve summer stress include enjoyable exercise options like swimming, playing a fun sport, yoga, or casual walks to enjoy summer scenery.
Disconnecting from technology can also give you a much-needed break. Take some time away from emails, social media, and constant notifications which will allow you to recharge. It will also free up time for quality interactions with others. Why not connect with friends and family through cookouts, outdoor activities, or casual gatherings? Doing so can help with emotional wellbeing and balance. Mindfulness and relaxation techniques can be advantageous too.
Another idea is to take a change-of-pace break. You can venture out on a day trip, explore a new place nearby, or spend a weekend away. This will get you out of the house and the drudgery of your day-to-day routine while breathing some fresh experiences into your life.
The goal here is to find a balance between productivity and relaxation this summer. A productive summer doesn’t have to be a busy summer! Rest is often the thing that allows you to become more focused and energized. So, go out there and enjoy all that this season has to offer!
