As we all know, the way content is being created and shared has completely changed over the last few years, and this change has had a huge impact on the world of business and entrepreneurship. Podcasting is one of these new mediums that entrepreneurs are using to market their authentic self and establish credibility in the business world. It allows you to spread your message, your passions, your identity, and your opinions in unique ways with your targeted niche audience.
Because podcasting is becoming so mainstream, there has never been a better time to get started, and I truly believe that every college student should launch their own podcast. My best friend from college and I started a podcast called Real Talk University: Exploring Success Stories Outside of the Classroom a few months into our first semester at college after we both came to a similar realization about the students around us: A majority of them were unaware of opportunities outside of the classroom to create wealth through financial education and monetizing their true passions. We envisioned a podcast where we would interview entrepreneurs who have successfully pursued their passion by taking a path outside of the classroom. The goal of our podcast was to inspire our listeners to find and pursue their passions.
Going into this, we had absolutely no idea what we were doing. But after two short months, we have been able to put out one episode per week while also having the opportunity to interview huge names in the business world that I myself have personally studied and learned from for years prior. For example, I would have never had the opportunity to write for Thrive Global if it wasn’t for my podcast. Arianna Huffington suggested that we share the inspiration and idea we had behind the project. I never would have thought I’d have the chance to not only interview Arianna but to also write for her!
Again, going into this, we had absolutely no idea what we were doing. We did not know how to get our voices out of the recording software and on to apps like Apple Podcasts. We simply recorded our first episode and figured it out on the fly. It was the farthest thing from a perfect debut. But I think in today’s age, the most important quality and trait of an entrepreneur is to take action. With all the resources to self-educate yourself, it is not hard to learn the basics of putting out a podcast. You can learn as you go, and I assure you that if you put some time and effort into it, it can make a huge positive impact on your life and your career.
Our first few episodes were shaky at best. But we kept grinding, knowing that we had a strong purpose and that many students could benefit from our content if we could get it to where it needed to be. Very soon after, our podcast went viral. We landed on the Apple Podcast charts overnight. We were blown away. We picked up a huge influx of new users and followers on social media and we instantly had more inspiration and stronger motives to continue down this path.
At the time I am writing this article, we have put out 15 episodes of our podcast, which have been listened to thousands of times. We have interviews lined up with big name after big name, all while being paid from things like ads and merchandise! So, why should you start your own podcast? By starting your own podcast, you are creating the opportunity for yourself to be extremely credible and relevant in whatever area of work or passion you are into. Podcasting also gives you a platform to share your voice and your message. So, what is your excuse? I know for sure that everyone in college can do what Christian and I are doing. All it takes is passion and commitment. And of course, taking massive action.
