Mental illness is no joke. If your life has been affected due to this reason than you know what I am talking about. Whether it’s a family member or a close friend, you can’t ever disregard the fact that somebody is troubled and needs help.
What I’ve learned from personal experience is that having support from friends and family and various people who are close to you can really help. The care and love of can in a certain way bring people back, but what I recently came to learn was to idols have a positive effect on mentally ill people.
Celebrities can be of great help in this case. As I have noticed, being appreciated by your idol or a celebrity has many benefits on mentally impaired people. I also learned that a lot of celebrities are actually willing to help people with these kinds of illnesses. One of the most notable and attractive celebrities in the world, Selena Gomez, has managed to capture the hearts of many. But what many people don’t know about her is that she has been diagnosed with lupus right at the height of her career. The disease has been known to come with psychological effects. But even at her lowers, Selena was able to climb back right on top.
She took several breaks from her career and show how strong she is when she came back to accept an award at the American Music Award for favorite female pop/rock artist. Demi Lovato is truly an idol for the common person. Despite her beauty and great singing talents, she is also a wonderful person. Luckily things turned for the better as she was able to realize her troubles on time and address them.
Since then, Demi Lovato has been an advocate for all people with mental illnesses. She gave a speech at the 2016 Democratic National Convention and the National Alliance on Mental Illness Action Day in 2014. She is very outspoken about female issues and also runs an anti-bullying campaign.
Lady Gaga
Lady Gaga is probably the most polarizing figure in today’s pop culture. She transcends styles and has amazed everyone with her powerful voice. Recently, she gave an interview where she spoke about her troubled past. Namely, at the age of 19, she was raped and she says that she is still suffering from PSTD because of what happened.
Gaga now follows her personal mantra (You are brave, you are courageous) which helps her get through and makes her feel better in life. She is a supporter of the LGBT community and says that we all need to surround ourselves with positive people. It is a very important part of success.
Jim Carrey
One of the most famous comedians in the world, Jim Carrey, is the last person you would have thought suffered from depression. But in his case, it was something that helped him launch his career. He became famous as a result of facing his demons and overcoming his illness.
In his youth, Carrey’s mother became very sick so in order to cheer her up, he developed his unique sense of humor that we see today. Carrey also says that medication is not the answer and that we can achieve much more through meditation. Being spiritually centered brings balance to our mental health.
Bryce Dallas Howard
Many women suffer from postpartum depression. Celebrities are not immune to it either, which we see with the example of Bryce Dallas Howard. After giving birth, Bryce went through this but it is her willingness to talk about it and allow other people to see how she feels about it is what truly helped her.
Bryce wrote a very honest essay on this topic which clearly depicts what she went through and how she got over it. Bryce also emphasizes honesty, both towards yourself and other people as a path to wellness.

Our Princess Leia may have left us, but Carrie Fisher will forever be in our hearts. Getting famous at a very young age, Carrie went through a roller coaster of a ride in her private life. The role of a lifetime in Star Wars and the popularity she gained because of it has led Carrie to a dark path of drug abuse and depression. She was diagnosed with a bipolar disorder.
Her illness forced her to take drastic action. After reaching the bottom she underwent electroconvulsive therapy for her affliction. Carrie often talked about the struggles in her life and how she managed to overcome them. There are interviews and even books that she wrote. If you are struggling with these kinds of problems try seeing what Carrie had to say about it and I promise you it will make you feel better. Wayne Brady is one of the few men who publicly talked about his problem. Despite his on-screen personality, Wayne has struggled with depression and had lots of problems facing it publicly. It was finally when he was able to talk about it when he started getting better.
Depression affects men and women equally, but men are not really prone to talk about it. Wayne participated in a #StrongerThanStigma campaign where he emphasizes that we all have to seek help and be ready to talk about personal problems in order to get better. Hiding is not going to make anybody better.
Lena Dunham
Lena Dunham may be more recognized because of her outspoken political and sexual views. But she has also become known because of her mental illness stand. Since she herself suffered from the same conditions she decided to help other people by helping them face their problems.
If you see Lena’s numerous interviews and videos where Lena talks about her struggles you can see that people can be brave in order to overcome this condition. She emphasizes the importance of exercise and talking about problems in order to overcome them.
Pete Wentz
The basis and vocalist of Fallout Boy, Pete Wentz, has been one of the most outspoken men when it comes to mental illness. He has suffered from depression for many years and struggled severely to overcome them. It became so bad that he even tried to take his own life away.
He has been one of the most outspoken celebrities on this issue. He is now a part of the Half of Us campaign that seeks to end teen suicide. He feels that he can help other people, as he didn’t have help when he struggled with this issue.
Catherine Zeta-Jones
Catherine’s struggle with depression and having a bipolar disorder was unknown to the public for many years. But it was the struggle she had when her husband was battling cancer that triggered her. It was then when she started publicly talking about it and even admitting that she has already been struggling with this problem for years before.
Finally aware of her problems, Catherine has checked in several times in a treatment facility to overcome her struggles. After learning exactly what she has been suffering from and getting the right medications, Zeta-Jones was able to get proper help and get over the problems. She seeks to inspire other people to do the same so they get help on time.
