When I work with budding entrepreneurs and other motivated individuals on the lookout for slaying their personal and business goals, I always lead with this one question: “What is your vision?”

And, more often than not, I receive a variation of these 3 responses:

“Uh, I haven’t really thought about it for a while…”

“Um, I don’t really know what it is…”

“I have a fair idea, but I’m too XYZ/not in the right place”

Well, let me tell you something: you can flip the script pretty quick on an amorphous vision if you write it down. Writing it down gives you accountability. Writing it down turns a vision into intention.

So how can you craft a strong, practical, and achievable vision that charters your growth instead of weighing you down?

Let’s get to the juicy bits.

1. Ask yourself “What does success look like to you?”

Managing a team remotely from Bali?

Finally having that conversation about your appraisal?

Swinging that Birkin harder than SJP?

Write it down.

And don’t just limit your vision to your business or work. Get your personal goals in there.

Because there’s a clear hand off between your life and your work, whether you’re an entrepreneur or a corporate busy bee.

You’re multi-dimensional and your vision should reflect that.

2. Make sure it’s attainable

This is super important.

A vision is no good if it’s not in sync with your current situation. A vision becomes dead weight if it’s not achievable.

So, don’t go in hard with a 5-year goal. Instead, jot down what will define success for you in 3 months, or if you really want to stretch it, in the next 6 months.

And remember, consistency is key. Once you commit to a vision, make sure you go over the small steps that will help you achieve your vision every single day.

3. Write your vision like you’re living it

Sure your vision is for the future you, but writing it like you’re living it brings about conviction.

What do I mean?

Instead of  writing “In July, I’ll launch my course and it will be a roaring success,”  stoke that fire in your mind and write “I’ve launched my course and it’s a roaring success already!”

You know what?

There are 7 billion people on earth, and only 5% of them are leading the life they envisioned.

What sets them apart?

Defined action and conviction.

Don’t you want to transition from the 95% to that 5%?

4. Visualize it everyday

Nope, I’m not asking you to day dream.

When you undertake a certain task, don’t you think about how it will pan out in the end?

You need to approach your vision the same way.

Tune out your fears and take 5 minutes every day to tune in to your vision.

A great way to do this is to create a secret Pinterest board. When you find something relevant to your vision, pin it and come back to it daily.

The Wrap

A vision is the most powerful way to keep yourself motivated. And, it will give you a clear idea about where and how to direct your energy and your resources.

Lastly, a vision helps you see beyond your current reality.

Truth be told, a vision is the most delectable and productive form of escapism as it’s rooted in reality. Your reality.
