5 Tips on How to Sleep Better

Sleep with the lights off.

Darkness tells your internal clock, “Hey, it’s time to wind down for the day!”, and your body will adjust into a more relaxed state, sending you on your way to some much need rest.

Ditch the technology.

No, really. Turn off the TV, the PC, and your phone. Checking email, stalking your friends on Facebook, and watching TV doesn’t relax your body, it stimulates it. Then when you do fall asleep, you’re not reaching that deep, restful state of sleep because your body is on information overload.

Meditate.

Do it for however long feels right to you; I suggest ten minutes at a minimum. Meditation helps to minimize and eliminate the “mind chatter” you experience when you turn in at the end of the day. It will help your body wind down and prepare for sleep. When you try to meditate, and thoughts pop into your mind, acknowledge them, and they will go away. Then refocus yourself on breathing and relaxation.

Don’t drink beverages after a particular time.

Waking up at night to use the bathroom disrupts your sleep. Even when you fall back asleep after waking up, you’re likely not reaching that deep, restful state of sleep you need. Cut yourself off from liquids after a particular time each night to minimize sleep disruption.

Make sure you have a pillow that adequately supports your body.

I can’t tell you how many times in the past I’ve woken up from neck and back pain, and I know it happens with many of you. The proper pillow can make or break the quality of sleep you receive. Invest in a high-quality pillow made to support how you sleep.
