Although you can lie on the bed watching a movie or reading a book, however, most of the time, you lay on the bed with the intention of going to sleep.
There are some health reasons why you may not be able to fall asleep when you go to bed. Such things as insomnia can keep you tossing on your bed until morning. Apart from insomnia, there are other reasons why you may be finding it difficult to sleep at night. Here are 7 known causes.
Inappropriate mattress
It is the first on our list. This is because your mattress plays a huge role in determining the quality of sleep you get at night. If you have nothing to worry about and yet you find it difficult to fall asleep, your mattress could be the culprit. You need a mattress that is not too firm or too soft. Not only will you be able to fall asleep easily, you will find that you can sleep for a very long time during the night. Your mattress should be able to offer you some relaxation and rest that is needed for a quality sleep.
Rigorous workout
Some people swear that nothing gets them to fall asleep quickly as working out before nighttime. While this may be true, it does not apply to everybody. If you partake in a rigorous workout before sleep, you may have a hard time falling asleep because your metabolism will be overly stimulated which increases your heartbeat and make you to be more awake and alert. Therefore, if you find it difficult falling asleep after a workout, try moving your workout time to the morning or better still do it in the mid afternoon so that you can maintain your fitness level without having to pay for it with your sleep.
Caffeine containing drinks
Most people start off their day with a cup of tea or coffee. This is not a bad idea since it tends to keep your mind alert and awake to go through with the demands of the day. But some people have made it a habit to drink a cup of coffee at intervals during the day. You then find that they have a hard time falling asleep because the caffeine in the coffee and tea is keeping them from sleeping. It is better to limit your caffeine drink to mornings alone. It is better to engage in a healthy lifestyle to achieve a quality sleep than using caffeine drinks.
Room temperature
You need your room to be in the right temperature to be able to sleep better when you lie down. If the room is too cold or hot, you may not be able to sleep well at night. Try turning on the air conditioning if the room is too hot. But if the temperature is not that hot, then using a fan will be preferable. As long as you are not sweating or freezing up, you are good to go. The room temperature you should aim for should be like 60 and 66 degrees. Don’t allow the temperature to be below 45 degrees and not more than 75 degrees Fahrenheit.
Transformations
When you are going through a certain change in your life – whether it is negative or positive – you may not be able to sleep as easily as you used to. You need your mind to be at rest before you can achieve a goodnight rest. If you are out of job or starting a new one, moving house, going through emotional issues like a breakup with your partner – can affect your mood. Once such changes come up, you may become anxious, too excited or in high anticipation that your body will find it hard to sleep. So, if you are still battling with sleep, try and check if something is worrying you and then deal with it.
Money or work related issues
If your work is such that leaves you very stressed out, it will definitely impact negatively on your ability to get a sound sleep at night. Issues such as a demanding boss, poor remuneration, too much pressure, much work, no job satisfaction, or just lack of time to rest can tell negatively on your health and ability to sleep. When there is lack of money, you will not be able to meet up with some of your basic needs.
Exhaustion
There is this belief that exhausting yourself completely can help you fall asleep easily and deeply. This is not always true as some people find it hard to fall asleep as a result of exhaustion. You will be surprised to find yourself staring at the ceiling on such days. Exhaustion can cause your body to be alert and mentally active that you won’t be relaxed enough to fall asleep. If you can get your body to relax, you will be able to fall asleep regardless of how exhausted you are.
