Michael S. Roth is president of Wesleyan University and a historian, curator, and teacher. His new book is Safe Enough Spaces: A Pragmatist’s Approach to Inclusion, Free Speech, and Political Correctness on College Campuses, new from Yale University Press.He is the author of six previous books, including, most recently, Beyond the University: Why Liberal Education Matters, also published by Yale. Roth previously served as president of California College of the Arts (CCA), led the Getty Research Institute’s Scholars Program, and was the founding director of the Scripps College Humanities Institute in Claremont, CA. He regularly publishes essays, book reviews, and commentaries in national newspapers and scholarly journals.
