Country diva Corinne Cook recently released the music video for “One Box Of Tissues,” a song from her latest album, Yes I Can, on CCM Records.
Produced by Denny Martin, “One Box Of Tissue” includes a who’s who of Nashville musicians: Scott Neubert (guitar), William Ellis (drums), and Dow Tomlin (bass).
Yes I Can is Cook’s third album, following her debut album I’m Not Shy, featuring a pair of hit songs, “Uninvited Guest,” which hit the #1 spot on Inside Country’s chart, and the title track, topping out at #4 on Inside Country. Cook’s sophomore album, Dressed Up For Goodbye, included the 2016 Nashville Industry Music Award’s Song of the Year, “I Don’t.”
Originally from Central California, Cook grew up surrounded by a musical family, and sang in choir in school. After graduating high school, she joined the U.S. Air Force, where she continued singing. A medical lab technician, she was stationed at Travis AFB during the Gulf War.
Upon returning home from her military service, Cook entered a singing contest in a bar. First prize was a recording contract. Cook’s performance was so impressive the contest’s host paid her way to Nashville, where she laid down tracks eventually culminating in her debut album. Later, she moved to Nashville to pursue her musical vision.
“One Box Of Tissues” opens on a melancholic, elegant piano rife with the anguish of heartbreak topped by Cook’s deliciously doleful voice, jam-packed with flavors of “woe is me.” Then the song kicks into an upbeat “never-let-them-bring-you-to-your-knees” psalm of strident assertive vitality, vibrant and galvanizing.
Cooks voice, with a luscious drawling inflection, infuses the lyrics with bubbly wisdom on how to handle the searing pain of heartache.
“Seven days crying ‘cause you’re gone / Six sleeping on the couch alone / Five bottles of sweet red wine / Four pints of rocky road / Three nights of food to go / Two good friends telling me to move on / Yeah it’s / One box of tissues and I’m done.”
The video, directed by Nina Baldridge, opens with Cook seated before a piano and then lying on a couch, despondent, as she sings of her emotional plight. As the images progress, the video curves into a caricature of post-breakup blues, highlighting her seven-step blueprint for recovery.
“One Box Of Tissues” is superbly charming, full of infectious country momentum, witty lyrics, and the scrumptiously buoyant voice of Corinne Cook.
