Emma Martin set to work narrowing down the whole wide world to just five destinations from which they could choose.

Cape Town, South Africa

Cape Town South Africa

A location steeped in history and known for lush beaches, extensive safaris, and Table Mountain (City Bowl and the Atlantic Seaboard).

Accommodation: The Gardens District offers a lot for seniors:  first, it is quiet; second, it gives one a feel of how the locals live; and third, it is walking distance from Kloof Street, which features many local eateries and retail stores such as Mabu Vinyl.  Another area with senior appeal is the V&A Waterfront which happens to be one of Africa’s most popular tourist destinations (so isn’t as quiet) but offers incredible views of Table Bay and Table Mountain. And the Mount Nelson Hotel can be a real hoot for seniors wishing to enjoy a proper high tea; I know mom and dad would love that!

Food: Many of the restaurants in Cape Town feature special discounts for seniors 60+. Popular restaurants offering senior deals include: Doodles Beach Front Restaurant (Table View, Cape Town), Bertha’s Restaurant (in Simon’s Town) and Hussar Grill, which serves South African meat. Bear in mind: October is Seniors Month in South Africa, which often means additional special pricing.

Transportation: The options are bus, metro, shared taxi and private taxis (some of which are just for women). Note that buses are subsidized, so public transportation is very cheap.
