Every book, has a story about its creation, what’s the story behind Rowan Revived?
The story behind Rowan Revived started a few years ago when I was visiting the Eastern Shore of Maryland with my husband. The two main characters, Jesse and Lena, sort of invaded my head on that trip and never left, so I knew I had to write their story. Everyone deals with some sort of loss; whether it be losing a loved one or drifting from a friend. Rowan Revived is a story that centers around two people who have been through a lot, who have lost a lot, but are figuring out how to piece themselves back together.
A good story is all about the setting, the descriptiveness, and the raw energy that captivates, all coming together to have the reader turning the pages effortlessly. Your book includes all of them, what is one of the keys that you find is critical when getting into the writing zone?
While most of the settings of my books are fictional, they are largely based on real places. My writing process usually starts with one element: where the story takes place, one particular scene, one character, and then I build off of that.
Are there any new surprises that we can look out for when reading your latest novel?
Yes, but I can’t tell you what they are!
In all seriousness, there’s some bleakness in this book that might surprise some readers. But even though these characters have dealt with different types of pain, it’s more about how they learn to rebuild after the storms in their lives.
How long did it take for you to write your book and what were one of the challenges you faced while writing it?
I’ve been building this story in my brain for years now, so when I finally got all the details just right, I wrote it in a little over a month. One of the biggest challenges I faced while writing it was the backstory of Lena’s sister; without giving too much away, there’s a scene that was particularly hard to write. But it made writing their comeback that much sweeter.
Another challenge I faced was that I was pregnant with my daughter. Foot cramps, sweet cravings, and kicks to the ribs were a little distracting while trying to write a few thousand words, but it was a distraction I was happy to have!
