Emma Watson is serious about setting healthy boundaries with social media and email, according to Interview Magazine.

Watson is no stranger to speaking out about her relationship with technology, and as someone who grew up on-screen, keeping her digital life private is of the utmost importance to her.

“I love social media, and I love what it can do and how it brings people together,” Watson tells fellow actress Jessica Chastain during the interview. “But used in the wrong way,” she continues, “it’s incredibly dangerous. We need to make sure that we are using technology, and technology is not using us.”

Watson tells Chastain that while she’s always been careful about her relationship with screens, starring in the new technological thriller The Circle (based on the Dave Eggers novel of the same name) has heightened her awareness. “I set even more boundaries than I had before between my public and my private lives,” Watson says about the films’ influence on her, adding “it made me think a lot about what I would do if I had children.”

Watson says that before the press tour for The Circle, she deleted the email app from her phone and “tried to create serious boundaries from it, because it is addictive.” Watson clearly understands the value of disconnecting and why it’s so important — tech is addictive (as we’ve explored) and taking a break from apps that drain you is essential if you truly want to unplug.

While Watson specifically says she doesn’t consider herself a role model, she’s setting a great example of how to be mindful of the way technology impacts our lives.
