brainstorming new careers

If there’s one thing we all have in common – it’s work. No matter what walk of life you come from or what you do, we all have to work (unless you have some sort of generous inheritance lying around somewhere and in that case, maybe this isn’t for you).

For most of us, much of our lives are spent confined in an office. In fact, you probably spend more time with those at work than you do with your own family. Among other reasons, this is why it is so important to have a job you actually enjoy – if not love.

It was recently discovered that the average person in Britain will spend 3,507 days at work during their lifetime. More interestingly, many British people surveyed for the same poll said they thought about quitting their jobs 16 times per year on average.

Such a sobering statistic highlights the importance of choosing a job that you love, and it’s never too late to start again.

So if you hate your job and fancy a change, here’s what you need to know about retraining for your dream career.

The Career

The first thing you need to think about is what career you’ll enjoy.

Maybe there’s something you’ve always wanted to do like care work, or maybe there’s a passion you had while you were younger like photography or hairdressing. Maybe you have a hobby that you’d like to turn into a business, such as dance, cooking or baking. There could even be a profession you’ve always had the dream of pursuing, like becoming a lawyer or practicing nurse.

Once you’ve decided on this, you’ll have to move on to the next steps by finding a place to train, or learning how to set up a business and buying all the bits, such as dance shoes, baking accessories hairdressing foilor a new camera.

Types of learning

Following this, you’ll need to think about what type of learning you want to do, or what type of learning you can do.

If you can’t afford to quit work, you can still retrain to do something else as there are multiple options available.

The types of retraining you can do include:

  • Full-time studying
  • Industry training
  • Apprenticeships
  • Part-time studying
  • Distance learning

Obviously, it will all depend on the type of career you’re looking to move into as each one will be different, and several will most likely offer various options for training too,

The cost

This is probably the thing that’s holding you back the most, however, it shouldn’t.

If you have it in your head that it’ll cost too much, maybe look into it first and shop around, as you may be able to find a course that’s cheaper than you originally thought.

Again, it will also depend on what you’re training to do, as different careers will cost different amounts.

If you’re not sure what it is you want to do, maybe take a look and see what careers you could move into, maybe you’ll unearth a passion you forgot you had. Either way, don’t be stuck in a career that makes you want to quit more than once a month.
