Our daily routines can make a huge difference to how healthy, happy and productive we are. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve tried adjusting my own routine in the hopes of getting more done and wasting less time in-between tasks or activities.
It’s kind of sad that these days almost all of us live by the clock. Our lives are divided into 24-hour segments and we often just fall into line according to the numbers on our watch or phone. At 6am it’s time to get up, at 12pm time to make lunch, 3pm is the school pickup, etc. That means that when we go about trying to improve our routines, we end up changing the time we do things, like checking email later or setting the alarm earlier.
Since summer has well and truly finished, I keep thinking about the changes I’m making to my routine as we transition into autumn. During the summer months I feel so much less guilty stopping work early to go to a family BBQ because come autumn I know I’ll be hunkering down and working even harder. There’s just something about these autumn months that kick my ass into gear – maybe it’s the lead up to Christmas, or maybe it’s just the natural rise and fall of the seasons.
Autumn to me, means more sleep (especially when it’s too cold to get out of the covers!), more reading, more walks outside to take in the gorgeous colours , more reflection, more soup and crusty bread, more crime dramas, more night sky, more reflecting and planning and more getting down to business. More World Domination Planning!
Obviously, not everyone’s seasonal routine will be the same. First of all, your line of work might not allow for flexible seasonal changes, or you just might not be a big fan of soup! Using the seasons to uncover your own natural rhythm and routine is what is important here. No one can tell you what feels autumn-y to you, so figuring out routine requires some reflection and trial and error. But spending a little time charting your own responses to the changing weather and shorter days might just mean accomplishing more and being happier while doing it.
