Jason Borrevik was born and raised in Eugene, Oregon. As a child, Jason expressed significant interest in playing both football and tennis, but his unparalleled passion for basketball was the strongest. Jason’s interest and love for basketball is a direct result of his grandfather playing in the NBA.

Jason Borrevik obtained his Bachelor’s degree in Economics, graduating Manga Cum Laude in 1994. Following his degree in economics, Jason moved on to a Law degree from the University of California at Berkeley, Boalt Hall. During his time at UC Berkeley, Jason worked as a legal intern for the Oakland Raiders.

Upon graduation from UC Berkeley, Jason accepted an associate position with Wilson Sonsini Goodrich and Rosati. He worked with the Executive Compensation and Benefits Group, which enabled him to specialize in assisting with the legal, tax, regulatory, and accounting issues relating to executive compensation for technology companies.

In 2005, Jason Borrevik left the legal world and joined Compensia as a management consultant. At Compensia, Mr. Borrevik provides objective expert advice to compensation committees and senior management at a wide variety of technology and life science companies. Jason is able to help his clients develop an executive pay structure that drive long-term alignment with key company growth measures and investor interests.

When Jason Borrevik is not working, he enjoys quality time with his family.

What do you love most about the industry you are in?

My favorite thing about my industry is that within this profession I know that what I do has a directly positive impact on the overall outcome for each client I consult with. I am grateful that I have the opportunity to connect with people from all around the world and knowing that what I do is truly helping them. I am extremely fortunate to say that I get to help people every day for a living.

What keeps you motivated?

I am motivated from several avenues but the two main drivers of motivation for me are the feeling of accomplishment, and the success of my clients. The feeling of accomplishment I earn when I help a client is by far the best motivation I have found throughout my career. I am also driven by the success of my clients; I am thrilled when our clients are successful and drive shareholder results in a way that materially improves the lives of their employees. Feelings of personal and team accomplishments as well as the success of my clients are what keeps me moving forward.

How do you motivate others?

I motivate others with my positive attitude and presence. I treat every colleague with the respect they deserve and assign responsibility to those who are performing well. When a colleague is struggling, I am the first person to lend a helping hand and help to set some stretched goals to help point them in the right direction.

What suggestions do you have for someone thinking about working in this industry?

To anyone thinking about entering the executive compensation and management industry, I would strongly suggest you never stop learning. Do not stop reading – read at every opportunity you can. The more you learn about your individual areas of interest, the more unique connections you can make with different personalities. In this industry, knowledge is a major key to success, you must always keep up to date on all regulatory changes specific to your business interests.

What’s one piece of advice you give others?

One piece of advice that I would give others is to always have an open mind and experience new things. Make a conscious effort to seize every opportunity that is presented to you and make meaningful efforts towards being open minded.

What is your biggest accomplishment?

My greatest personal accomplishment is raising my sons, but my biggest professional accomplishment is earning my title as Principal at Compensia. I am very proud of that title and the work that I do with Compensia and my clients.

If you could live anywhere in the world where would you live?

As a native of Oregon, it is very difficult to see myself living anywhere else in the world. I love everything about Oregon, it provides my family with the option to spend time outdoors by the mountains, or to attend a Portland Trail Blazers game. There truly is no place like Oregon.

Do you have any hobbies?

Outside of my career, I spend as much time with my family as possible. I am a huge basketball and football fan and enjoy bonding with my sons over sports. I am heavily involved in my children’s extracurricular activities and help with coaching both their football and basketball teams. Other than my family time, I enjoy reading, watching movies, and unwinding in nature.

What does your future look like?

My children are now 14 and 11 and are entering a very exciting time in their life. I am looking forward to further guiding them through life and watching them develop into their own unique people. As far as my professional goals, I expect continued growth for our industry and especially for Compensia.

I am excited that the subject matter of my work continues to develop and evolve, which requires ongoing diligence and education to ensure I remain relevant. I am optimistic that I will be able to work in disruptive and interesting fields such as self-driving vehicles, robotics, 3D printing, and artificial intelligence.
