Millennials are barely relaxing weekly due to their phones, according to a new survey.
A new survey conducted by OnePoll asked 2,000 British adults between ages 18-34 about their relaxation habits, finding that Millennials relax for just seven hours-a-week, barely an hour each day, according to SWNS.
Six in 10 admitted that they never truly relax due to their obsession with their phones, which stems from personal or work emails to text messaging. The smartphone obsession forced one-tenth to say that their needy phone-checking makes it difficult for them to go longer than 10 minutes without being glued to their phones.
But what’s more troubling is how nine in 10 of respondents open their phone for the sake of opening it, even if they don’t have any unread messages.
“Relaxing is hugely important, but it’s something we often relegate to the back burner of our lives,” said a spokesman for beauty book app Treatwell, which helped with the research. “Thanks to mobile phones and everything they allow us to do, it means that often when we are ‘relaxing’, we are still ‘switched-on’. Neglecting our relaxation time can have a really detrimental effect on us, but it can happen quite slowly, so you don’t realize it’s happening. Often it takes someone else buying us a gift or taking some of the load from us, to ‘force’ us into a change of habits.”
With phones taking up so much would-be relaxation time, nearly half of respondents (46%) said they wish they can roll back to a time where the smartphone wasn’t invented in order for them to switch off more easily.
The most popular way to relax was by watching TV (59%), which ranked higher than reading a book (54%) or going for a walk.
