Bandwidth management is about the capacity to effectively manage your attention, energy, and focus. This is why bandwidth management is an essential part of leadership effectiveness. If you don’t have adequate bandwidth, you’ll eventually find yourself running on empty and naturally, not performing at your best. While there are many strategies to build bandwidth, saying no is an essential part of the process. When you say no to requests that are not at the top of your priority list, you’re building bandwidth. Likewise, when you say no to people or situations that are consistently taking more than they are giving back to you, you are building bandwidth. To begin, it is important to recognize that saying no shouldn’t be viewed in a negative light. In fact, by saying no more often, you’re creating the time and space to focus on things that really matter. In the end, more “nos” just might make you a more present, grounded, happier, and productive person and leader.
