I’ve loved the outdoors all of my life, just ask my mom. From the moment I got out of the city and out into the country where I could roam to my heart’s content she knew I’d met my equal. It was common knowledge not to let me get out to far or it would take way too long to get me back inside for meal or when it was time to go back home. On vacation trips to Florida my respite and solace was found on the beach there was nothing better than a piece of mind and calm that being in nature truly gave. When it was time to go back home and get on the airplane I wouldn’t go up the steps and my dad would grab me, half carrying me to get on board the flight.

Nature has an impact on our brains. Research shows us and it speaks loudly but calmly to reduce our stress. Which in turn creates calm in our bodies and grounds us in our heart and brain. Our blood pressure, muscle tension, and heart rate talks to our immune system and a pleasant serenity reverses that entire anxious stress mood. Nature disintegrates the most hypervigilant stress.

I ate heartily after being out in all of that fresh air, dirt , trees, grass and sunshine. I barely ate in the city, so bunged up by all of the hustles and commotion, competition and bustle. Both my mother and my grandmother would always comment on how skinny I was when I arrived but how I looked so much better, happy and not so gaunt after time there outside. When I grew up and became an adult with my own apartment in the city I would come home every weekend to the country. I couldn’t wait for the weekend I so needed nature restoration and soothing.

Research tells us even having plants in hospital rooms and being able to see trees out the windows help patients to tolerate pain better. Nurses say there are fewer negative side effects. Feelings of depression, stress and anxiousness gave rise to positivity, wellbeing and meaning. People believed they could get healthy again and looked forward to early dismissal.
