Steps to a Smooth Exit from Work

Quitting your job

The thought of quitting a job is normally met with a lot of uncertainties. There is a lot that goes through the mind; what the future holds, how long it will take before landing another job, what if the next work environment is worse. All these uncertainties may make the exit process difficult.

Peace of mind is more important than sticking to a non-progressive job. When you have made up your mind to quit, there are several steps you should follow. Never wake up and give a call to your boss that you quit. An official resignation letter or email is important. In that email, indicate your reasons for leaving and when your effective last date will be. Avoid rudeness and at least be grateful for the time spent with the company.

In most companies, you will be asked to go through an exit interview by the human resource department. At this point, you will be required to give feedback on areas that you may recommend improvements by the company. You also get an opportunity to inquire about the benefits you will be receiving as you exit.

Handing over is usually the last stage of your exit process. You may be required to train someone new or an existing employee on how to go about your duties. Always have a checklist of all things you do and tick them off as you cover them with the person who will be taking up your job. Ensure that you submit any company properties that were in your possession and get a clearance certificate from your company.

Quitting a job should be done professionally so as not to impact negatively on your future career endeavors. Even when you feel like you can not stand the company for one more day, it is important to remember that it played a vital role in your professional growth as well as providing you an income during the time spent there.
