Getting a good night’s sleep might be easier than you think.

Often it’s only when our sleep pattern becomes disrupted that we come to realize just how important a good night’s sleep is. But sleeping well night after night is a challenge for all of us, and is often an unrealistic goal.

But luckily for those who are regularly finding that they don’t sleep well, scientists have for many years been involved in sleep research, concerned with solving the most serious of sleep problems, but some of the findings are useful for those with mild sleeping problems.

But before we even consider how we might go about improving our sleep, it’s important to understand what a good night’s sleep even is. According to the National Sleep Foundation you can judge a good night’s sleep with the following four factors:

  • You take half an hour or less to fall asleep
  • You wake up no more than once per night
  • If you do wake up in the middle of the night, you fall back asleep within 20 minutes
  • You’re asleep for at least 85% of the time you spend in bed

If you regularly meet all four of the above factors then in general you don’t have a problem with sleep. But if you regularly fail to meet one of the factors then it’s likely your sleep pattern could be improved.
