Wondering why you’re still feeling groggy (and maybe a little cranky) well into Monday afternoon? It could be because today is “Sleepy Monday,” a day when we’re all more likely to be sleep-deprived thanks to Daylight Saving Time.
This Quartz piece explains how Christopher Barnes, a University of Washington business professor who coined the term “Sleepy Monday,” “found the Monday after we set our clocks forward is the one time of the year when most Americans consistently don’t get enough sleep.” The result? We’re especially moody, accident-prone, judgment-impaired and more likely to spend our time perusing the internet at work instead of actually working.
Good sleep is important every day, but when your internal clock has been thrown off by an hour’s time change, it’s particularly critical. For the sake of your focus (and anyone who might be on the receiving end of your cranky mood), make sure to get a full 7 to 8 hours tonight. Remember too that since your emotions may not be even-keel today, take a moment to center yourself through a practice like mindful breathing if and when stress strikes.
