For a special live episode of The Thrive Global Podcast, Thrive Global founder and CEO Arianna Huffington sat down with music icon Katy Perry as part of the singer’s “Witness World Wide” livestream promoting the release of her latest album Witness

Perry told Huffington what it took for her to learn the power of taking breaks.

“After I had finished a tour for two years, after I played the Super Bowl, I was so spent,” Perry said. “I had output, output, output. I was so tired. I couldn’t tell my ass from my elbow.”

Perry remembered one particular fan encounter that stuck out for her, “I couldn’t give anything more. I remember going home on one trip and someone asking me for a picture, and typically, that would be okay and I was just like, ‘I can’t do it.’”

Perry said she hit the reset button and took six months to recharge.

“I knew I wanted to keep giving,” Perry said, “and in order to do that, I had to take care of myself.”

“You have to refuel yourself,” Huffington said. “We forget sometimes to connect with ourselves.”

Perry said following her June “Witness World Wide” livestream, she was going to reconnect with herself and take some time off — and away from her phone.

“I’m giving out a lot and I’m able to connect with others but it’ll be a time where I’ll just need to go back into my little cave and just connect with myself, so that I can be there and be the best version of myself,” Perry said.

And how does she do that? By disconnecting from technology

“I’m going to try and stay off my phone a little bit. I’m going to enjoy good food. I’m going to maybe watch a movie. I’m going to keep meditating. I’m going to sleep. I’m going to try and eat less sugar. So, I’m going to treat myself, basically.”
