I think as a coach you need to have experienced coaching. Equally I think if you really believe in it as a discipline you would have a coach.

I’ve always had a coach. When I worked in corporate back in the day it was provided for me, then went I went self employed I paid for it. I knew I was investing in myself and my future.

I had a sounding board, someone who got it. Someone who understood my world. Someone who “got” me.

It wasn’t a well intended friend. It wasn’t my partner. It’s wasn’t a family friend.

I found that I made better decisions. I achieved more. I achieved the promotions and the increase in salary I desired. I felt unstoppable and my mindset was bulletproof.

Then, in business it just made great business sense to get myself a coach. I usually have a couple. It’s not greedy it’s just great business sense. Play to your strengths and seek support with the growth you need.

Having a coach makes me a better coach.

Think of an elite athlete, they have physical coaches, nutrition coaches, performance coaches, mindset coaches. Their performance and their ability to perform is their business.

So, if you’re sitting there considering a coach, how do you find the right coach for you? Are you doing your due diligence, and how are you doing it to find the best coach / mentor for you?

There are 6 epic questions I would ask:

1) What are their client results?

  • Can you access genuine testimonials?
  • Do they have case studies?
  • If you want to make a consistent £5K –  what’s their success rate?
  • Do they offer for you to talk to their clients?

2) What are their qualifications?

  • Are they professionally qualified?
  • Do they have the experience that you need to learn from and they can draw from?

3) Are their values aligned to yours?

  • Do you connect with them?
  • Does it feel like a good “fit”?
  • Can you see yourself working with them in the long run?

4) Are they accessible and responsive?

  • What’s their access like?
  • How often can you talk / consult with them?
  • What are their SLAs? How quickly do they promise to get back to you – there’s nothing worse like waiting for a response to a question that you believe is critical.

Here’s some questions about you…

5) Are YOU coachable?

  • Are you ready for change?
  • Do you listen to advice?

6) Are you really ready to take action?

  • You need to be prepared to do the work – to implement, to take action.
  • Action fixes everything and no one can do it for you.

Be really honest, are you ready? Is this for you? Now armed with your key questions, go out and find the RIGHT coach for you!
