Typically, when I’m in a rut, I’m overwhelmed and feeling uninspired, making it hard to bounce back. My first thought is to sit in front of the TV for a few hours and binge on some Netflix to relax. Although that sounds like a great idea, it only makes my situation worse. Instead of being a relaxing experience, watching hours of TV only creates more stress.
I know when I’m in a rut I need to hit the gym to get my blood flowing and my heart pumping. I personally love weightlifting because it forces me to shift my focus on the task at hand. Form is extremely important and that’s what I must put all my energy into, leaving no room for my anxious thoughts to flood in. When I lift I feel rejuvenated and sometimes when I go on the treadmill for a cool down I’ll start typing up an article (like this one) because I’m feeling inspired again. Going to the gym isn’t always easy. Some days I’m not in a hurry to jump off the couch and get at it, but I know it will get me back on track.
Getting in a workout doesn’t help everyone get out of a rut, but there are plenty of other ways rather than plopping yourself down in front of the TV. Here are a few of my favorites –
Go for a walk
Sometimes you just need to get up and go for a stroll. Take in your surroundings and find inspiration in the beauty around you. Take your dog, your spouse, or a cup of coffee and get out there. Walking releases feel-good endorphins while reducing stress and anxiety.
Grab a coloring book
No artistic skills needed, just color in the lines and let go. Coloring can put you in a meditative state, clearing your mind and releasing stress. Sit down with a coloring book, put on some music, and you’ll feel relaxed in no time.
Curl up with a good book
Unlike binge watching your favorite show, reading increases brain power and helps you focus your mind elsewhere. Getting lost in a good book is a great distraction from whatever is dragging you down and helps you reset.
Be Mindful
When you’re in a rut it’s easy to point out all the negative things going on in your life, so take a moment to remember the positives. Even if it seems impossible, start small, once you get going it becomes easier to point out the things you are grateful for.
Start Writing
Some of my best articles come from when I had no plan at all. Free flow writing may be exactly what you need to get your creative juices going again. Take out your laptop and just start typing, ignore any grammatical or spelling errors and see what comes out of it.
