Dr. Chiu has over 25 years of experience in the life sciences industry as an entrepreneur, researcher, and venture investor. Most recently Dr. Chiu has focused his attention on fixing the health care system by creating new pathways for innovation and change. In partnership and as Business Advisor to Stanford CERC and as the leader of Malin Burnham’s San Diego based Obesity/Diabetes Working Group, Dr. Chiu created the vision for three entities: VAVICI Foundation, VAVICI Ventures and VAVICI Company. Together these create a new public to private initiative. One that is capable of building, developing, and implementing the programs we need to bring about change in healthcare. Dr. Chiu is the first and only one to implement a comprehensive and collaborative program with a major medical society (AACE), to identify and treat patients with a chronic disease, Acromegaly. This accomplishment sets the stage for VAVICI’s plans to do the same for obesity and diabetes. Dr. Chiu is the founding and managing partner for CMX Capital, LLC, a San Diego based venture fund focused on providing advisory services to investors and life science companies. Dr. Chiu can and has taken operating positions, including CSO and VP Business Development for Bridgetech Holdings International, CEO of Aitria, and CEO of VAVICI Company. Prior to founding CMX Capital, Dr. Chiu founded its predecessor Novel Bioventures Advisors, where he served as Managing Director and built the investment team that invested in seven companies in less than two years. He was a Venture Partner at Forward Ventures, where he sourced, evaluated, and served as Director or board observer for numerous private equity investments. Dr. Chiu has both clinical development and marketing experience from two major pharmaceutical companies, Schering-Plough and Novartis. He was part of the founding oncology team for Novartis Oncology and led the effort to put together the Oncology team’s first sales force and product launch. He has launched products both domestically and internationally. Dr. Chiu received his M.D. from Stanford and an M.B.A. from the Haas School of Business at the University of California, Berkeley. He received his B.A. in Biochemistry from Cornell and is a member of the American College of Gastroenterology, the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists, The Obesity Medicine Association, and The Obesity Society.
